Avenida Alvear is one of Buenos Aires’ most elegant and regal streets, and along with Qunitana and Posadas is the most up market commercial and residential areas of Buenos Aires. Visitors can start the seven-block stretch at Plazoleta Carlos Pellegrini, and wander to the Alvear memorial where the street ends. Beautiful old houses and grand palaces survived Buenos Aires’ tumultuous past and line this street. Haute couture owns Avenida Alvear with big name stores such as Cartier, Prada and Louis Vuitton. The Recoleta Cultural Center has undergone many reincarnations. First, a place of worship, its function replaced by next-door Iglesia del Pilar; later converted for use as a hospital during the British Invasion in1806; an academy of art1815; then an asylum until re-built by the architect Juan Buschiazzo in 1858. The Floris Genérica, known to foreigners as “the huge metal flower” is located in the center of the United Nations Plaza on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta between the Facultad de Derecho (University of Law) and the MALBA museum. In 2002, architect Eduardo Catalano erected the flower as a gift to the city. This flower, said to be a symbol of all flowers (generica) stands as a symbol of both nature and technology. MALBA, the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires, displays modern art from all over South America. Artists include famous Argentine surrealist Xul Solar as well as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Recoleta Cemetery constitutes one of the three most important cemeteries in the world. Built in 1822 it suffered various renovations angering many an ancestor. Its architecture captures the opulence of the dominant classes that settled Buenos Aires between 1822 and 1930. This vast monument of a bygone age presents a startling historical journey and a good guide will open your eyes to the names and milestones of South America’s most historical capital city and its great late historical figures.
