
This neighborhood is situated on the centre of Buenos Aires and is concentrated around “El Obelisco”. It holds numerous o f business and financial centers plus shops, restaurants, cinemas, government buildings, parks, squares, monuments, etc.
It is famous due it has two of the biggest avenues in the world: 9 de Julio Ave, which is the widest one, and Rivadavia Ave, which is the longest one.
It is also a place full of historical places, such as Plaza de Mayo which witnessed most of the great historical events. During the colonial period it served as a public market and as a Renaissance square with civic relevance conferred by the important public buildings such as the Cabildo.
Avenida de Mayo is one of the most important avenues. It gathers lost of restaurants and cafeterias and it has maintained its style through the years. It was built with a special design that allows having a visual perspective which let you see Plaza de Mayo and Congress Square, the two points around which the National institutions are located.
Florida Pedestrian Street is the perfect place for shopping. Along its 10 block people will find commercial shops, bookstores, bars, fast-food outlets, restaurants, cafeterias, etc.
Its main attractions are:
• San Martín Square: Designed by the architect Carlos Thays, it has a great historical importance and it is the battlefield on which Buenos Aires residents defended themselves from the English during the English invasion of 1807.
• Corrientes Ave: this avenue holds the most important theatre activity of Buenos Aires. Besides it possesses bookstores, cafes and pizza places.
• “El Obelisco”, with its 67.5 meters of height is considered to be the symbol of Buenos Aires. It was built in 1936 as a reminder of the first time our National Flag was raised in 1812. Inside of it there is a 200 steps staircase that leads up to the small window that is located on the top. It is situated on the corner of 9 de Julio and Corrientes avenues.
• Colon Opera House and Theatre. This theatre displays a French style and it was designed by the architect Julio Dormal, who finished in 1907. It has a capacity for 2400 spectators. Its dome has a Parisian stained glass window through which lights casts attractive colors. It has its own museum that holds ancient musical instruments and customs, as well as workshops. It is located on the block formed by Cerrito, Viamonte, Libertad and Tucumán Streets.
• Café Tortoni: One of the oldest and traditional best preserved places of Buenos Aires. It was founded in 1858 and it was frequently visited for famous characters such as Carlos Gardel and Benito Quinquela Martín among others. Nowadays jazz and tango shows are displayed. It is situated at 826 Avenida de Mayo.
• Casa Rosada: The seat of the national government since the First Council. It owes its color to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who painted it with pink to symbolize the reunification of the country after the civil war between Federals whose color was red, and Unitarians, whose color was white. It is located at 50 Balcarce Street.
• Cabildo. This building was the scenario of May Revolution. Its worked was stopped on 1821 when the Law of Suppression of Cabildos was dictated. Today it works as the National Historical Museum of The Cabildo of Buenos Aires.
• Galerias Pacífico shopping center: Right on Florida Pedestrian Street, this shopping mall is one of the most luxurious ones of Buenos Aires. People can find first brand shops as well as restaurants and cafeterias. It is located on the corner of Florida Street and Córdoba Ave.
