
San Salvador de Jujuy
This city was founded by Francisco de Argañaraz y Murquía on April the 19 th of 1593 and is located on a beautiful and magic place surrounded by mountains that form a triangle with the tall herbaceous of Nieva and the Xibi-Xibi and Grande Rivers. Right form this place it begins the ravine of Humahuaca, a natural climbing path to the Puna. Here the mounts present an extraordinary range of tones that goes from blue to red.
It displays a mixture of styles on its architecture. Visitors will find modern buildings and colonial style constructions.
However the lodging infrastructure is very modern with high hierarchy hotels, restaurants and cafeterias. The commercial center has lots of regional shops where visitors can purchase llama wool sweaters, and a great variety of handcrafted products. The most important shops are situated on Belgrano, Alvear, Lavalle and Necochea Streets.
This city respects traditions and religion; inhabitants are used to celebrate religious festivities walking down the mountains making up parades playing musical with autochthonous instruments and praying. They also celebrate the Carnival with enthusiasm. Some of the most known festivities are La Mancha Fiesta that is celebrated in La Quiaca and El Toreo de la Vincha that takes place in Casabindo.
During Christmas time visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy traditional aspects such as the Holy Families, Christmas Carols, The Ancient Ribbons Dance, and Trence and Destrence Dance, carried out for children.
From September the 17 th to the 23 rd takes place the celebration of the Latin American festivity of the student; and from August the 23 rd till the 30 th the commemoration of the Exodo Jujeño takes place. This act is a reminder of the fact that took place during the Independence War when the inhabitants, escorted by General Belgrano, were obligated to leave the devastated lands of their town.
