It was founded by Juan Jufré on June the 13th of 1562 in the Tacuna Valley, a region that was once inhabited by Huarpes aboriginals. It is the Capital of San Juan province.
It was once called the city of statues by the famous writer Arturo Capdevilla due it owns a numerous varied of monuments built in memory of important historical characters such as the one built for Faustino Sarmiento, De la Rosa, Laprida and Fray Justo Santamaría de Oro among others.
San Juan is built on the foot of the high Andean Mountain Range; this was the cause of a terrible earthquake in 1944 that demolished the whole city. For this fact, even though it was rebuilt on the same place it was done respecting a security plan for earthquake zones in order to avoid another catastrophe. Now visitors will find wide avenues, modern buildings, and lots of parks and squares that act as green and public recreation places.
Its location gives San Juan particular landscapes, during the winter it’s all cover with snow and the poor in vegetation, but when spring season starts the snow melting produces natural phenomenon that takes the attention of tourists, the water flows from the top of the mountains and floods the thirsty grounds. Jáchal and San Juan rivers like other less important courses increase its water volume. Mainly these 2 rivers are in charge of flooding the grounds.
The communities who lived in San Juan in elder times used to live in the valleys, known as oasis between the arid foothill’s deserts. They used the water irrigation technique during a long period.
Together with Mendoza, wine production one of the most important economic and touristic activities. The city is full of wineries, where visitors can learn about wine production and try different types of the best Argentinean wines.
For all that this city is one of the most attractive ones on the province.
