
El Calafate
This town was founded on 1927 and it owes its name to the thorn shrub with strongly colored fruits that is spread all over South Andean Patagonia.
Situated over The Argentino lakeside and surrounded by hills with a characteristic flora with the predominance or lengas, and cherry woods, it constitutes the tourist center of higher hierarchy of the province of Santa Cruz and offers a benign microclimate that turns the place into an oasis.
The entire town is cross out bye the Calafate Stream, which divides it in two.
It is considered to be a place for resting. It is the nearest city for visiting The Glaciers National Park that holds the amazing Perito Moreno Glacier, which was declared Natural Patrimony of the Humanity by the UNESCO.
The constructions are typical for a mountain village, with gabled roofs to avoid the effects of the heavy snows.
